Irina Chen

Irina Chen is an economics alumni. She is attending Western University for their Masters of Financial Modelling program this fall.

Q: Why did you choose to study Economics?
A: The reason I chose to study Economics is simply – it is useful and applicable in the real
world. Economics happen around us. Firm relies on micro models to predict necessary
production and consumption. Government uses macro models to examine the development of
the country. Moreover, economics analysis can be applied to many social areas such as politics
and health. In a word, the world will collapse without economics system.

Quinlan Lee

Quinlan Lee is an economics alumni. He worked a year at the Bank of Canada as an RA after graduating from UW. He is now currently a 1st yr PhD Econ student at UofT.

Q: Why did you choose to study economics?

A: I chose to study economics because it’s a discipline at the intersection of social sciences and mathematics. While our goal is to understand human behaviour and decision-making, we also dedicate an extensive amount of effort in representing such choices using quantitative models. Economics is also a diverse field of study with many applications in the real world. As such, economists have constant exposure to new ideas and opportunities to work in a broad range of industries.

Rosemarie McClean CMA, MBA, BA, ICD.D

Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Senior Vice President

We had the great opportunity to speak with Rosemarie McClean, the Chief Operations Officer and Senior Vice President at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP), one of Canada’s top three pension funds with 154.5 billion dollars in assets as of December 2015. Rosemarie is an alumnus of the University of Waterloo’s undergraduate Economics program and holds a MBA from the Rotman School of Management.

Q: What is one thing you miss about university?
A: This is difficult because there are quite a few things I miss about University.

Let’s start with the people. I think it just hit me that I won’t really be connected with so many individuals my age again to socialize with on a day-to-day basis whether it be my friends, classmates or even club-mates like UW EconSoc ;).
